AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHER FEATURE

At the end of January 2024 Jeff Carter was invited by Amateur Photographer Magazine to submit a feature on shooting landscapes with a smart phone after their Online Editor had seen the images Jeff had posted on the MacLean Photographic Instagram feed from Glencoe taken on his new iPhone 15 Pro Max.

The 6-page feature was published on Tuesday 19 March in both the printed and digital versions. However, what Jeff didn’t know was that his picture from Glencoe was selected to be the front cover of the magazine. While Jeff has had thousands of images printed in national and international publications, this is the first time he’s had an image on the front cover of one of the UK’s leading photography magazines.

It is also quite apt as 30 years ago Amateur Photographer published Jeff’s first ever image, a panning shot of a Renault Clio race car at Donington Park. This was the start of more published work and encouraged him to become a full time photographer upon leaving the Royal Air Force in 1996.

While the iPhone 15 will never fully replace the Fujifilm X-H2 for landscapes, the six page article underlines that smart phone cameras are more than capable of getting quality results and having the front cover of a prestigious photography magazine with an image taken on an iPhone certainly underlines that fact.
